You will need a soft pencil or graphite stick and / or charcoal and a rubber. You will also need some colours that can be layered or mixed such as; soft pastels, watercolour crayons (or paints/pencils), oil pastels, or any paint. You don’t need all of these by any means. You will also need some ink - drawing or Indian ink, and of course some paper - this can be large or small. A drawing board with sheets of paper is great, but equally a sketch book on your lap is fine and can be a nice thing to develop and even take around with you. I’m a big fan of cardboard for working on. Also an old newspaper can be great to draw on. If you are investing in materials, then most of the ones I buy for my regular Life Class are from Jackson’s Art.
Draw from life in your own home. Observational drawing is a discipline that underpins all artistic practice. During this seven week course you will develop and hone your observational drawing skills through a series of liberating exercises, usually practiced in our life class, that are designed to free you up and be honest about what you see. We will tackle negative spaces, measuring, details, tone and more using still life, interiors, your own hands and feet, and culminating in a self portrait. This is a great opportunity to gain a fresh perspective on exercises you may already be familiar with, as well as a chance to experience selecting and composing a successful setup. As always the critique is individually focused with no “right" or “wrong” but rather a goal of individual development and original expression.
