Life Drawing in Oxfordshire

Life drawing classes and workshops with artist and tutor Charlotte Houlihan. Explore a variety of liberating observational drawing and painting exercises and techniques. With the option to experiment with the many materials available. Enjoy individual tuition in a small supportive group in rural Oxfordshire. All levels welcome, from beginners to practising artists.

Tuition is an important part of my work as an artist and I find supporting others inspires my own work. I often draw my students at work and I am fascinated by the relationship between artist and subject. I aim for a collaborative approach to my sessions, with an emphasis on experimentation, challenge and personal development. I offer a variety of tuition opportunities in Blewbury, which are listed below. I also tutor at Sunningwell School of Art, and hold occasional workshops at Charleston House and OVADA.

Draw to paint - 2 Days

7 & 8 April | Monday & Tuesday

Learn to develop your drawings into expressive paintings in this small group exploratory two day workshop. By popular request, this sought-after workshops has been extended to provide greater scope for you to develop your collages and drawings, and to begin, or even complete paintings. On day one spend the morning making dynamic and informative drawings from life with our wonderful model, then indulge your imagination and creativity as you develop these through further drawing and collage into beginnings for paintings. Return on day two to take these collages and drawings even further and begin to make paintings, exploring colour palettes, composition and abstraction. I’ll be sharing a little of the process I often use to help you learn how to develop even your simplest drawings into something more. You’ll have the option to experiment with the many materials available and with spaces limited to a small supportive group there is plenty of scope for flexibility in work and time for individual and group discussion.

Spaces are limited and on a first come basis.

LIFE CLASS

10th January - 28th March (14th & 21st February half term) | Fridays

10am - 12:30pm | £279 ten week term

Drawing is a means of communicating your ideas and sharing your observations. Whether you are a professional artist or a beginner, life drawing is like exercise for your eyes, and everyone can benefit from it.

During the Life Class you'll tackle a series of liberating exercises, designed to free you up and be honest about what you see. From blind drawing to negative spaces. You'll get to experiment with a range of materials, draw with chalk on sticks, practice measured drawing, tackle moving poses and find the model amongst a jumble of furniture.

Each week the group is given an exercise, but the critique is always individually focused, with no ‘right’, ‘wrong’ or ‘expected’ outcome, but rather a goal of individual development and original expression. So that beginners and practising artists alike are equally challenged and supported. The outcome being a continuous maturing of skill and confidence, in a relaxing and supportive environment.

We break for cups of tea and biscuits. I aim to end each session with some longer poses so that you have time to do your own thing and put what you've learnt into practice.

Spaces are limited and on a first come basis.
